I found our little “town hall” session to be very productive, and I heard answers to a lot of questions that have been floating around in the back of my mind. Particularly, I liked that we discussed what exactly a thesis is supposed to do. I, like many others, was under the impression that my thesis has to find a problem and solve it. It seems like most of the thesis presentations that I’ve seen have followed that trend, and it is a bit intimidating to think that I have to go into research knowing that I have to solve the problem, so I’m glad to hear that’s not exactly the case. Especially for me, as a lot of things I’ve been thinking about as possible thesis topics don’t really have “solutions” or any way to find one. Overall, I found that the vast majority, if not all, of the major questions I had about thesis were answered.
